The Campbell River Storm like the vast majority of junior hockey programs in this country rely on billet families. Without them, most of these young men would not be able to pursue their dream.
All teams in the VIJHL rely on billet families in some fashion and although there may be some differences from team to team the idea is the same. In the case of the Storm, families receive $500 per month along with season tickets (2 per player) and they are expected to supply food, a bed and a room. The weekday curfew for the Storm boys is 10:30 pm.
You can contact Lee Stone by phone at 250-204-8326 or email via firstname.lastname@example.org.
It’s a tough decision but based on the testimonial of so many billet parents the rewards are immeasurable.
2 year Billet Mom
“If you have ever considered billeting but haven’t quite decided then please read this.
I am a local Campbell River Storm parent of a player as well as a billet mom to these hard working, driven, responsible and respectful young athletes. This is a very special, rewarding experience for both the billet families as well as the boys who come here from all over Canada and the USA to play for our community, Our Team. Behind the scenes of junior hockey are the billet families who are feeding, supporting and cheering on these elite athletes. The hockey family is a bond and a relationship like no other and meeting and having players in our home, watching them play, being a part of their hockey lives is very special. These young men leave their friends and family, move here to Campbell River pursuing their hockey careers and we as a community need to welcome them into our homes and provide a safe, comfortable place where they can be a part of our families. All it takes is a room in your home and heart and food in the fridge.
What billeting means to me is Friday night hockey games! Being a part of the community and making a difference is someone else’s life. Forming lifelong friendships, having team spirit and a very exciting and rewarding experience. Billet families play a very important role, opening your home to the players and providing a stable and secure home away from home. There are many long lasting friendships that develop between players and billets and it is important to the player, family and team to know that when these players arrive they will be welcomed with open arms to their billet family."
6 year Billet Mom
“I never wanted to be a billet parent, for many reasons. I didn’t like the idea of having strangers move into our home. Our house wasn’t big enough. It was too much work. I was too busy with my own kids. I didn’t have time to look after another kid. However …..
My sons talked me into taking a billet. After much pleading and under protest, I finally agreed and our first billet joined us in 2013. It was much better than I had imagined! This fall, I will be taking Storm billets for the 6th season in a row. Sometimes I have one billet; sometimes multiple billets. Some boys stay for one season and some return the following year.
These boys truly do become a part of your family. You think of them as your own. You share in their ups and downs. You become friends with their parents. Yes, sometimes it can frustrating. Yes, it is a lot of work. Some days are easier than others. Some boys are easier than others!!
But when you step back, you realize how rewarding it is to be able to provide these hockey players with a home away from home, and know that you are making an impact on their lives. There are definitely more positive experiences than negative. It really is a sad day when you have to say goodbye at the end of the season.
My own son has billeted out of town for a few years. I can tell you as a parent there is nothing better than knowing your child is happy and safe in a good home!! I will always be grateful to the families who have looked after him.
Several of my billet boys come back and visit me every year and I love to have them return. They are part of my family. And who wouldn’t want to get Mother’s Day calls and texts every year from boys that will forever call you Mom!?”
